Improve the Texture of Your Skin With Microneedling

Microneedling Fresno, CA

Microneedling is a popular cosmetic procedure used to improve the appearance of the skin. It is minimally invasive, making it a convenient option for many. If you are looking for a way to smooth out the texture of your skin, microneedling from a wellness center may be the answer.

What is microneedling?

Microneedling is a skincare treatment that is often confused with microdermabrasion. In microneedling, the medical provider creates tiny holes in the surface of the skin with small, sterile needles. In contrast, microdermabrasion is when the provider exfoliates the outermost layer of skin with an abrasive device. Microneedling reaches farther down in the skin than microdermabrasion.

Professional vs. at-home microneedling

Microneedling may be done on various parts of the body, such as the arms or legs. No matter the intended area of treatment, at-home microneedling is not recommended. At a wellness center, medical providers perform microneedling with sterile tools and in a sterile space to reduce the risk of infection. This risk is difficult to minimize in a home environment. A lack of medical training and proper sanitation techniques can easily lead to the contamination of tools and surfaces.

How it may improve textured skin

Microneedling improves skin texture and other skin conditions by stimulating collagen production. Since the body creates collagen (a type of protein) to heal the skin, it must produce collagen to heal the tiny pinpricks made during treatment. Microneedling helps the patient achieve a smoother skin texture, typically on their face. The skin should also appear firmer.

Types of textured skin microneedling may help with

When medical providers talk about textured skin, they generally refer to dry, rough, flaky, or bumpy skin. These textures may result from various factors, such as sun damage and acne. Fortunately, microneedling may help with each of these types of textured skin, regardless of the cause. In order to get lasting results, patients may need to incorporate other products and treatments into their skincare routines. For example, using SPF daily to prevent further sun damage and the return of poor skin texture is a common technique.

Other signs you could benefit from microneedling

While microneedling can often help improve skin texture, it can also help with other skin conditions. Patients who have noticed the following conditions may benefit from microneedling at a wellness center:

Hyperpigmentation

Skin discoloration, or hyperpigmentation, refers to an uneven skin tone that may range from pink to red, tan to brown or black, and even purple to blue. According to Healthline, it may result from something as harmless as a birthmark, sun damage, or acne to something more serious like an infection. Other examples include pigmentation disorders (vitiligo), rosacea, psoriasis, and eczema. Microneedling may help with hyperpigmentation from sun damage or acne, but it is not recommended for patients with an untreated skin infection, psoriasis, or eczema.

Acne scars

Acne can lead to scarring that seems nearly impossible to get rid of. Microneedling gets under the outer layer of the skin, effectively treating stubborn acne scars. Patients must tell the medical provider about any acne medications they have taken within six months. It is not recommended to receive this treatment when taking certain medications like Accutane® (isotretinoin). This is to reduce further scarring and promote proper healing.

Enlarged pores

Pores are the minuscule openings on the skin’s surface. Sweat and oil are naturally expelled from the glands beneath the pores. When there is an excess of oil, the pores may appear enlarged. Other causes of enlarged pores include sun damage, overexfoliation, and aging. There are many ways to correct pore size, a common one being microneedling. Although the pores will not disappear, the healing process may shrink their appearance as the skin tightens and firms up.

Common signs of aging

Aging is inevitable, as are the signs of it. The first sign is fine lines, which will gradually deepen into wrinkles. Some of these (dynamic wrinkles) occur due to the repetitive use of muscles, like 11 lines forming between the eyebrows due to furrowing one’s brow. Others (static wrinkles) are rooted in the loss of collagen that occurs as one ages. Microneedling may help with both. New collagen production helps with static wrinkles, while the tightening of the skin may help with dynamic wrinkles.
