Personal Fitness Testing: What to Expect

Personal Fitness Testing Fresno, CA

Before beginning your journey with a personal fitness instructor, you will likely need to complete personal fitness testing. This is used as a form of measurement to gauge your progress throughout the duration of the program.

What should I do to prepare?

Before you show up for your fitness testing, there are a few things that you can do in preparation. The initial appointment will take much longer than regular appointments, so plan for plenty of time, likely about an hour or more.

Since you are going to a personal fitness testing appointment, make sure you dress appropriately in comfortable clothes. You will be expected to move around, doing specific exercises, which will help determine a good starting point for your fitness program.

Make sure you are well informed about your own medical history, as your personal trainer needs to know about any conditions that will affect your ability to exercise.

Eat something light that will keep you energized, and make sure to stay hydrated. Make sure you eat about half-hour or so before your appointment.

At your first appointment, ask your trainer about their credentials. Personal should be certified by an accredited personal training group, which may include ACE, ISSA, or NASM. Ask about their experience and if they have a degree in any movement science.

If you have a complex medical background or have specific ideas of what you want from the training program, seeking a trainer with a degree may be a wise idea.

What to expect at the appointment?

When you arrive, your trainer will ask about any medical history that may affect your ability to do specific exercises. They also may ask you about previous exercise experience, and preferences, and goals.

The personal fitness testing process will involve your trainer observing various movements. They will monitor your posture, flexibility, and balance, as well as your movement abilities. Your body composition will be noted, as well as your cardiovascular abilities, muscular strength, and endurance.

Your trainer may also measure your blood pressure and take your measurements to determine your starting base point.

All of the information gathered at the appointment will be used to develop a realistic fitness program that is ideal for you and your abilities. Your trainer will also likely ask you about your schedule so they can better create a realistic plan that you can both stick to.

How to make the appointment work for you

At your initial session, make sure you communicate well with your trainer. Establish your likes and dislikes when it comes to fitness training, and make sure you let your trainer know if you cannot complete a certain exercise or if anything hurts.

If you are uncomfortable with doing specific exercises, make sure you let your trainer know. Your trainer is a very knowledgeable person, so ask questions and be prepared to learn. With that said, it is your time and money going into the training sessions, so make sure it is what works best for you and your body.
